American Red Cross
The Red Cross helps people affected by disasters with emergency shelter, meals, emergency supplies, and health and emotional support. They can also help connect families with other recovery resources. Red Cross help is free.
To ask for help, call 1-800-RED CROSS (1-800-733-2767) or visit redcross.org/get-help. Any Red Cross shelter or service center opened for the Hopi area will be listed under Relief services above when it is announced.
FEMA and disaster assistance
FEMA help for individuals and families is only available after a federal disaster declaration that covers your area. If one is declared, you can apply at DisasterAssistance.gov or by calling the FEMA Helpline at 1-800-621-3362.
Requests to FEMA for the Hopi Tribe or a village are made by tribal leadership, not by individuals. Watch the tribal notices on the front page for announcements.
After the flood
- Go home only when officials say it is safe. Stay out of damaged buildings and away from downed power lines.
- Take photos of damage before you clean up, and keep receipts for repairs and supplies.
- Floodwater can carry sewage and chemicals. Wear gloves and boots, and wash your hands often.
- Throw away any food or drink that touched floodwater.
- If you use well or hauled water, ask your village or the Tribe whether it is safe before drinking it.
- Never run a generator, grill or camp stove indoors. The fumes can kill.
- Dry out wet areas as soon as you can to prevent mold.
- Check on elders, people with disabilities, and neighbors on unpaved roads.
Giving and volunteering
Give through organizations you know, and be careful of donation requests from strangers or unfamiliar pages. Before dropping off supplies, check what is needed. Coordinators post donation drives and volunteer needs under Relief services above.
Speaking for the Tribe or a village
Please do not contact county, state or federal governments on behalf of the Hopi Tribe or any village, or act on their behalf. Requests for help for the Tribe or a village must come from a tribal representative or a delegated authority.
For your own emergency, always call 911 or HLES dispatch.
